Tips for Watering Your Trees

Proper Tree Watering

As we get closer to summer, watering your trees is one of the easiest ways to keep them healthy and stress-free. Consistent watering is the key to success! However, the most common watering mistake is actually too much water.
Whether it is too much or too little, watering the right way can be tricky, but not if you follow the tips from your favorite tree company. Pittsburgh’s Horhut Tree Experts recommend the following.

When to Water

The best time to water is in the morning or later in the evening. This allows the roots to have a chance to take in most of the water compared to the afternoon, where the water evaporates quickly.

The size of your tree, soil conditions, and weather conditions determine how often you should water your trees. The best way to see if your tree needs watering is to check the soil. Your end goal is to have moist soil. If the soil is dry to the touch, your tree needs to be watered.

Newly planted trees need more water than established ones to ensure proper and healthy growth.

How Much

The standard rule is 10 gallons of water per inch of the tree’s diameter. You can use a ruler to measure or your best guess.

Consistency is Key

Allowing the soil to stay too soggy or too dry will result in a stressed tree that will be more prone to disease and infection. Keeping moist soil is essential.

Deeper is Better

One of the most essential elements of watering is the “how.” Slow and deep is your best bet. Drip lines are the preferred method of watering, but spray from a garden hose will definitely do the trick.

Deep watering lets the root zone take up enough moisture. When you are setting up a drip line, make sure it extends the entire area beneath the tree’s canopy and to a depth of 10 inches.

Selecting the Right Type of Tree

If you live somewhere that is prone to droughts; you will want to choose a drought-tolerant species. These types of trees are used to dry climates and will grow better and help you conserve water.

Newly Planted Trees

Young trees require more water because their roots are still establishing themselves. Water new trees once a day for a couple of weeks after planting and for the duration of the growing season. Once the roots extend beyond the root ball, you can water on a normal schedule. You will want to check the soil to ensure you are not overwatering.

The Power of Mulch

Mulch helps keep the soil from drying out too quickly. Applying mulch that is 2-4 inches deep will help maintain the moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Watering Year Round

During dry spells in the winter, you should be watering your trees. Just because it is cold does not mean your trees are not growing. Water when soil and air temperature is over 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and there is no snow cover.
