Tips for Summer Tree Care

Tree Care

This summer, don’t allow the trees on your property to fall victim to summer storms, drought, intense heat, disease and insect infestations. Take care of your landscape by paying special attention to your trees from June through August.  Horhut Tree Experts, a local tree care service in Pittsburgh, suggests the following tips for healthy, happy trees this summer.

Inspect Thoroughly
If you didn’t already give your trees a thorough inspection during spring, now is the time to do so.  Be on the lookout for any signs of disease or damage before the full growing season begins.  With the summer weather, you will notice an increase of insects on your property that like to congregate around your trees.  If not monitored carefully, these pests can quickly multiply and cause damage to your trees.   Bagworms, Japanese beetles, aphids and summer mites are just a few of the pesky pests.  Carefully inspect your trees throughout the summer, so any problems can be quickly resolved.

Apply Mulch
Mulch helps to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while providing a finished look to your overall landscaping.  If you did not have a chance to mulch this spring, it is not too late.  Be sure not to apply mulch against the trunk, as it will cause disease and issues with insects.  Begin mulching a few inches from the base of the trunk and extend to the drip line—adding two to five inches of mulch around your tree in a donut shape.

Water
Watering trees is extremely important, especially when it is hot and dry outside.  Newly planted trees require deep watering (4-6 inches below the surface) one to two times per week to promote better root growth.  As trees grow, you can use more water less often, but typically trees need about one inch of water per week.  If possible, try to water your trees in the morning to avoid evaporation.

Prune
Typically, the majority of pruning is done in the spring.  There are times when you may need to prune in the summer.  Flowering trees that bloom in the spring are best pruned in early summer.  Additionally, trees with diseased or damaged branches should be taken care of as soon as they are noticed, which may not be until summer. To ensure your trees are properly pruned, consider hiring Horhut Tree Experts, a local tree care service in Pittsburgh, with its team of master arborists.

Apply Fertilizer
Be sure your trees have enough nutrition to support leaf and shoot growth, help fight diseases and help fight off pests.  These living creatures need food, too, to survive and flourish.

Prevent Storm Damage
Heavy winds and strong thunderstorms are typical during the summertime, so you want to make sure your trees can stand through it all. Consult an arborist in Pittsburgh to evaluate the sturdiness of your trees.  You may have to cable or brace trees with weak limbs.
